Jimmy Kimmel: Why ABC Decided to Pull the Plug on Jimmy Kimmel's Late Night Show

Jimmy Kimmel is one of the most beloved hosts on late night TV, yet may soon step away from small screen hosting for good. Howard Stern recently stated on the Howard Stern Show that he is considering not signing another contract after this year's 20th season ends. Donald Trump reportedly became so angry by the show's jokes about him that he directed White House staff to call Disney executives directly and inquire about their reactions. Why Kimmel? Jimmy Kimmel has become one of the faces of late night television in recent years. He is widely acknowledged to be responsible for modernizing its format, producing an entire generation of younger liberal talk show hosts who now run late night programs themselves. Jimmy is well known as being an outspoken critic of political right and an anti-Trump movement spokesperson; as well as regularly taking shots at celebrities and public figures. Jimmy even hosted a stripped down version of his show from home during 2020 coronavirus pandemic while raising money for various charities. Kimmel first made his mark as a radio DJ during the '90s before finding success as co-host of Comedy Central's game show Win Ben Stein's Money. Later that same year he moved over to ABC with a show that followed the classic late-night model with monologues and guest interviews; this earned Kimmel mainstream respectability as well as an ever-growing following; all while keeping true to his irreverent style. His popularity quickly skyrocketed over time, as did his edgy sense of humor. He became known as the host of a popular weekly segment where celebrities read disparaging tweets about themselves; also using family members like Cousin Sal and Aunt Chippy in many prank-related segments; as well as making headlines with off-color jokes and highly publicized fights between him and famous guests. Kimmel refused to cut staff or alter his show's format despite declining ratings, instead increasing staff in order to expand writing team capabilities and bring on experienced producers. He may be out of luck in his attempt to remain on air; sources have reported to CNN that ABC executives are currently considering replacing Kimmel with Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect program instead. Unfortunately, this solution could prove more complex given Barr owns a significant stake in it through her production company Carsey-Werner and it remains to be seen whether she would accept any deal that doesn't directly benefit her financially. Kimmel’s Ratings Ratings are everything when it comes to late night television. Hosts only have so much control before viewers begin leaving in droves - this can have serious repercussions for their host, such as Jimmy Kimmel. That's why it is vital that hosts like him continue doing what they're doing well and try to improve their show as much as possible. Unfortunately, Kimmel has experienced an off-and-on decline in ratings lately. While he has attempted to correct course, he appears stuck in something of a rut at this point. Kimmel's political commentary has put him at odds with some of his core audience. His attacks against Tucker Carlson and recent diatribes against the GOP's health care bill have alienated some conservative viewers; this is unfortunate, as more civility would benefit us all in politics. Conservatives understandably have attacked Kimmel for his comments; it is difficult to fathom how he could defend his criticism of Carlson or the Republican health care plan, though his political attacks haven't done any damage to his ratings. Kimmel has long been an outspoken critic of the GOP, so it should come as no surprise that his critiques of them have proven so successful. In his most recent monologue, the host lashed out at Sen. Bill Cassidy for co-sponsoring a health care bill which does not guarantee coverage to people with preexisting conditions. Bottom line, Kimmel should focus his comedy on universally appealing topics rather than any issues which might divide his viewers politically. Hopes are high that former Fox News host can break out of his rut soon, or it could spell doom for ABC and late night television as we know it. Kimmel’s Legacy Jimmy Kimmel is one of the premier late night hosts on television. Since 2003, his show on ABC has been airing for 13 seasons and counting. Additionally, Jimmy has long served as producer and host for Comedy Central's Crank Yankers under Jackhole Productions with Adam Carolla and Daniel Kellison as co-creators and hosts. Kimmel's birth chart reveals an aligning between Sun and Pluto that indicates his strong desire to communicate, along with needing respect and recognition from others. He is known to be quite the talker; evidenced by how each week his show opens with an entertaining special sequence featuring celebrity appearances. Industrial Light & Magic originally produced an opening sequence, but in 2020, this was switched out for an original video featuring several popular stars (such as Ben Affleck, Cameron Diaz, Don Cheadle, Jerry Seinfeld Paul Rudd Jodie Foster Lance Bass Michael Rapaport etc) performing "We Are the World." Over time, the opening video has evolved with each new semester to feature more clips and celebrity performers; yet its basic concept remains the same: to remind viewers about the importance of community while encouraging them to take part in helping those in need. As well as its star-studded opening sequence, this show has also become well-known for its silly pranks and celebrity cameos. Previous shows have featured things such as mocking the Academy Awards by selecting unsuitable nominees or turning an awards ceremony into an all-out game of beer pong! Kimmel's career highlight was surely interviewing the doctors who saved his son after he suffered a heart defect, creating an extremely personal yet humorous and emotive moment that also provided a human element to health care debates, inspiring viewers to donate money for Children's Hospital Los Angeles. At a time when most late night shows have degenerated into tiresome rehashes of old jokes and gags, it is refreshing to witness an institution like Kimmel who are still producing groundbreaking comedy material and pushing boundaries - it is no wonder his audience have stuck by him for over 10 years! Kimmel’s Future Jimmy Kimmel is one of television's most watched talk show hosts and ABC's highest rated late night program, yet at 51 he must consider how long they want to continue doing the same job; perhaps this played into Kimmel's decision not to renew his contract. Kimmel has become a familiar face to millions of viewers with his trademark snarky yet approachable everyman style, his loveable public pranks or their affectionate rivalry with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. A master at comedy himself, his specialty lies in taking complex political issues and making them relatable for everyday folks. Kimmel can also be serious when the occasion requires it, as evidenced by his opening monologue last week following Roseanne Barr's cancellation for a racist tweet - in which he presented an impassioned defense of civil discourse as it pertains to civil insurance coverage for preexisting conditions and federal funding of medical research. As with his predecessors Letterman and Carson, Kimmel has made himself famous through off-color humor and stunts that may not always please all members of his audience. These include jumping on trampolines with women wearing skimpy clothing during The Man Show's first episode and showing children weeping after learning they had consumed all their Halloween candy. However, these actions have caused controversy within and outside his audience. Kimmel is unique among his competitors at NBC and CBS in that his show airs exclusively on Disney-owned ABC, giving him an advantage in terms of accessing big names and exclusive premieres that would otherwise be harder for them to secure. Karey Burke, ABC Entertainment president since April 2016, acknowledged keeping Kimmel was one of her main objectives and stated she has spoken with him about staying for at least another few years; whether this will suffice remains to be seen.
